Clothing brands and retailers in Australia are invited to sign up as members of Seamless now and share the responsibility to transform how clothing is designed, enjoyed and recycled in Australia.

Find out more about the role of Seamless, how the scheme works and how your organisation can become a Seamless member.

About Seamless

Seamless is Australia’s national clothing stewardship scheme, which aims to make Australian clothing truly circular by 2030, and significantly reduce the 200,000 tonnes of clothing that currently goes to Australian landfill each year.

It recognises that transitioning to a circular clothing economy is a shared responsibility, and achieving sustainable production and consumption of clothing, and positive outcomes for people and nature, requires collaboration across the entire clothing industry.

How Seamless works

Seamless takes a stewardship approach, which recognises that the clothing brands and retailers who place clothes on the market are responsible for the entire life of that garment, from design through to reuse, reprocessing and end of life.

Seamless is funded by a per garment levy paid by clothing brands and retailers who are members of the scheme.

How Seamless drives positive change

Funds are invested to advance our four strategic priorities:

  • Circular design: incentivising clothing design that is more durable, repairable, sustainable and recyclable
  • Circular business models: fostering new models for clothing reuse, repair, rental and services that prolong clothing life
  • Closing the materials loop: expanding clothing collection and sorting practices for effective reuse and recycling
  • Citizen behaviour change: encouraging changed practices around clothing acquisition, use, care and disposal
How you benefit

By joining Seamless, you access member benefits including:

  • Leverage economies of scale and manage risk through collaboration on shared challenges relating to business and supply chain transformation
  • Access partners and networks in circularity across the world
  • Contribute to and adopt best practice that drives progress in circularity
  • Build social licence with credibility and gain preference with Australian consumers who are more likely to buy sustainable clothing
  • Increase trust and engagement with existing and future customers and suppliers
  • Get recognition through the exclusive use of the Seamless member logo
  • Belong to a network spanning the whole clothing value chain in Australia
  • Access evidence based resources from accredited providers and partners
  • Reduce risk with access to coordinated pilots and new ventures, with the potential to create new revenue streams
  • Get ahead on eco-modulation, reduce emissions and make savings through better business practices
  • Keep ahead of regulatory reform and increase reporting efficiency with aligned timing for other ESG reporting

Member contributions

Responsible clothing brands and retailers that join Seamless pay a 4 cent contribution on every garment placed on the Australian market, which is invoiced quarterly based on prior year volumes. This contribution is reduced to 3 cents for each garment that meets the initial eco-modulation criteria.

How funds are managed

The funding pool is managed by an independent, not for profit organisation, Clothing Stewardship Australia Ltd. which trades as Seamless, with support and guidance from the Australian Product Stewardship Centre of Excellence. Updates are provided to all members quarterly on activities, and financial accounts are published yearly in accordance with Australian law.

Code of Commitment

Seamless members agree to the Code of Commitment which defines responsible, collaborative and inclusive practices that are respectful of the natural environment, the well-being of people and the organisations operating in and connected to the clothing value chain. Together with our purpose, values and strategic goals, the Code is a key part of the Seamless culture.
