Earlier this year, the Federal Government launched Australia’s first national Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy. From 1 July 2025, businesses bidding for government tenders for uniforms above $1 million are required to meet agreed sustainability outcomes.

The new policy aligns with recommendations from the Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group interim report which was released in April 2024.

The policy is being implemented in phases. From 1 July 2024, businesses bidding for government construction services projects of more than $7.5 million were required to meet agreed sustainability outcomes. Importantly, from 1 July 2025, the policy will extend to tenders for textiles, ICT goods, and furniture, fittings and equipment above $1 million. It may include requirements to recover and recycle worn out uniforms that can be processed into new materials.

The project categories which include textiles were chosen for their high impact on nature and their immense potential in providing work for Australia’s domestic recycling industry.

The policy aligns with the Seamless mission and strategic objectives and will reduce the environmental impact of the Australian Government by leveraging the power of procurement. It will ensure that the government buys products that:

  1. Minimise greenhouse gas emissions
  2. Are safe for the environment
  3. Retain their value for longer

By generating demand for these products, we are all supporting Australia’s transition to a net zero, circular economy.
